FITNESS FOR WORK ASSESSMENTS/DISABILITY MANAGEMENT

Managing employee disability is one of the great challenges facing businesses today. Statistics suggest that the rate of disability is increasing, especially in leave granted for stress or depression. Disability leave is expensive whether in payments to staff who are unable to contribute to the company or in insurance premiums. Managing this area successfully can directly impact your company's bottom line.

A Fitness for Work assessment will:

• Determine the nature and level of disability
• Determine necessity and/or level of medical support (e.g. medication)
• Identify and improve upon the individual’s coping strategies for a potential earlier return
• Other issues that might contribute to the disability and potentially hamper a return to work

Assessment involves three phases: First, an interview between the individual and a clinical psychologist trained in assessment provides a review of history, current context, symptoms, and coping strategies. Secondly, standardized testing allows for a review of symptoms and styles/attitudes that aids in diagnosis and suggests appropriate interventions. Finally, consultation with involved professionals (most typically family physicians or counsellors), help to interpret the interview and testing results and make suggestions for improved treatment.

We can also provide a Return to Work assessment when required. These are useful when an employee is returning to a safety-sensitive position, or when they have been off for a long period of time. Such an assessment offers reassurance around the employee’s ability to return to work, and produces guidelines for both the employee and employer to ease the transition back into a productive work life.

We offer these services at our offices, at the convenience of our clients. For more information, please contact our office at: (403) 238-8300.
