Personal Stress Management
Executives have similar overall needs for stress
management to those of other employees; they need
to manage the physical, emotional, and social
impact of their own stress. Yet, executives are
often quite bad at managing their own stress because
of several barriers unique to this group. These
include attitudes, expectations (theirs and others),
and time constraints. The Calgary Psychology Group
offers services to executives that include:
• Stress assessment
• Individualized stress management
• Counselling for a full range of personal
and family issues, in a confidential setting
Leadership Development
Good leadership is an understandable and universal
process. Cross culturally, outstanding leaders
demonstrate integrity (being trustworthy, honest,
and just), are inspiring and visionary, are team
and excellence oriented, are win-win problem solvers,
decisive, and intelligent. Conversely universally
ineffective leadership behaviors include being
a loner, non-cooperative, ruthless, non-explicit,
irritable, and dictatorial. We can help develop,
and train outstanding leaders through:
• Coaching
• Assessment of leadership strengths and challenges
Executive and Leadership Coaching
“The most important workplace skill was, is, and always will be the ability to get along with people. If you don’t have that skill, any success you will have will only be temporary.” (Dave Murphy, 2000)
Social and emotional intelligence, the ability to understand others and self, and to manage emotions, demarcates average from superior leaders. Many people do not develop these skills naturally as they grow. Therefore, these skills frequently must be taught … and even the most skilled leader can benefit from learning and growing. A good analogy is that of the professional athlete – highly gifted and skilled. There is no advanced or professional athlete that does not have a coach. Could you imagine a professional hockey team without one? And don’t great coaches make great teams? Executive coaching can be viewed in the same way.
How does executive coaching produce a great team? First, profitability is increased by increasing the capacity of leaders to handle more complex responsibilities and increase teams’ energy and motivation, and enhance creativity devoted to profit generating activities. This often results in decreased expenses such as legal expenses incurred by avoidable conflicts, and a decrease in recruitment and training costs due to reduced staff turnover. Indeed research has found that organizations report a 500 to 1000 percent ROI increase as a result of coaching.
The main goal of executive coaching is to assist leaders to enhance their capabilities and maximize their potential. Executive coaching aims to train individuals who are already established in their careers to be more successful, equipping leaders with the tools, knowledge, and opportunities they need to develop themselves and become more effective. Executive coaching involves the teaching of skills in the context of a professional relationship with the learner, and providing feedback on the executive’s interpersonal relations and skills. An ongoing series of activities tailored to the individual’s current issues or relevant problem is designed by the coach to assist the executive in maintaining a consistent, confident focus as he or she fine-tunes strengths and manages short-comings.
Executive coaching begins with an assessment interview and proceeds with goal setting, action planning, assessment, and re-evaluation. It is advised that the initial session be conducted face to face however, subsequent sessions may occur through email or telephone format.
Our pricing of executive coaching services varies depending on the number of leaders receiving coaching and the anticipated length of time coaching will be provided.
